National Alliance for the Advancement of Prevention Initiatives

past failure while also being part of the potential solution. The movement is
“fragmented” and “siloed” but each prevention entity has the wisdom, determination
and following to be a part of a powerful prevention movement.
The National Alliance for Prevention is committed to working with all prevention-
focused entities to establish a UNIFIED PREVENTION MOVEMENT.
Any unified prevention movement must be community-based. To paraphrase Tip
O’Neill, the famous Massachusetts politician, “all prevention is local”. We at the
Alliance believe successful prevention efforts must be based on community-identified
concerns, locally organized and sustained through time so that successive generations
can experience the benefits and the community’s health and safety culture be positively
changed. Prevention-conscious leaders for any community are developed through time.
To hope that such a leader arises when the time comes is risky and perpetuates the one
of the myths of prevention: “let’s find the quick cure when we need to”. We must guide
the youth of today to be the prevention-conscious leaders for tomorrow.
in the physical, emotional, relational and spiritual realms of their lives. These realms are
interwoven and only separated for convenience. A unified prevention movement has to
deal with the messy complexities of people’s lives. By breaking down the “silo walls”
prevention thinkers and doers who focus on specific prevention realms can begin to
more effectively and creatively collaborate to address the overarching prevention
concerns in their community.
in all prevention-focused individuals and entities. Our Nation has so much to gain if we
locally combine our efforts.
